Kitten heels are making a comeback? I’m purring already!
I was ecstatic to hear that kitten heels are making a reappearance on the fashion scene. Mostly because I adore the look, but the excuse to go buy new fabulous shoes doesn’t hurt! And luckily, neither do these lower, less fashion-slave-like heels. Love!
But is the lowering of heel height purely a fashion phenomenon, or a reflection of the descent of the stock market? Do heel heights correlate to the ups and downs of the Dow? Are my new shoes coming at the expense of my retirement fund?
Actually, Yahoo! points to a trend toward escapism in times of economic trouble, which has lead to the increasingly high heels of the past few years. According to that theory, a trend toward a lower more reasonable heel is a sign of optimism!
During the Great Depression, heel heights rose. During the oil crisis of the 70s, they rose again. During the dot com implosion in the early 2000s, up they went. So last year’s trends of 5, 6 and even 12-inch heel heights can be blamed on bad economic karma.
The lowering of heels means we are ready to go out dancing to celebrate coming through the other side of the recession. Or at least an excuse to go stimulate the economy with some shoe shopping!
Either way, I am ready to say goodbye to both the bad economic times and my aching feet. Bring on the kittens! Puuuurrrrrr.

I just purchased a new pair of kitten heels and am glad to read your take on them. I am a real estate broker at Warburg Realty in the city, and with the market becoming active again what a relief to be in a comfortable little heel. Thanks for your insight!
