Park Manor and Pets Alive Make a Difference

by Ruth Folger Weiss on June 7th, 2011

The Town of Wallkill recently experienced a heartwarming story as Park Manor Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, a member of EPIC Healthcare Management, worked with Pets Alive to make a positive impact on the life of Resident Lori Terwilliger. Park Manor Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, currently known as Middletown Park Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, is a total service geriatric and health care center in Middletown, New York. With their expanded rehabilitation capabilities, they offer intensive programs that include occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy, pain management, wound care and a specialized Alzheimer’s unit.

Against medical advice, Lori Terwilliger was ready to check herself out of Park Manor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, where she’d spent the last three weeks rehabbing after a fall. She’d lived alone in her Mamakating home since her husband, Stan, died 12 years ago. With one exception: a poodle named Nicole she bought a couple of years after her husband’s death.

Lori’s neighbor contacted Pets Alive to see if they could look after Nicole until Terwilliger was released. Pets Alive is a no-kill animal shelter, located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, about 1 1/2 hours from New York City. Their mission is to improve the lives of companion animals everywhere by any means possible, including rescue, adoption, advocacy, collaboration, intervention and education.

Pets Alive contacted Park Manor to see if they could bring the dog to visit with Terwilliger. Park Manor had a better idea: give Terwilliger a private room and let Nicole stay with her as long as she’s there. Officials had to revise the facility’s regulations to get it done. “If this is going to add to her quality of life and care, and get her home safer, we’re willing to go the extra mile,” administrator Vincent Maniscalco said. “We would make that exception for any of our residents.”

The Starfish Award, from Pets Alive, is awarded to a person or people that have gone far and above what would be expected of the ordinary person, and have helped to make a BIG impact for animals and for Pets Alive. This prestigious award is being given to Lizer Jozefovic and Sandy Mozdierz. Lizer and Sandy have been an amazing support system to Pets Alive this year.
